Shoulder Pain Care in London
Chiropractic Care for Shoulder Pain in London
The shoulder and upper back work together, so if one part is not moving properly it can affect the other. Problems in the upper back can refer pain to the shoulder, arm and hand.
I’m Dr Ida Norgaard, a chiropractor at Inc-Health in central London. Shoulder problems can improve when the ribs and the mid and upper back are loosened and posture is improved, and chiropractic care together with tailored exercises may help ease pain and support recovery. Related issues such as neck pain and posture pain are often part of the picture.
Shoulder and upper limb pain are common in the working population, and the rotator cuff is one of the structures most often affected. Book a consultation at Inc-Health today.

Understanding the Shoulder
Shoulder Pain: An Anatomical Problem
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which makes it vulnerable to injury. It is formed by the humerus, the clavicle and the scapula, with the sternum and rib cage also involved, and these bones work together through the activity of the muscles.
The main muscle group is the rotator cuff, made up of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor. These muscles attach to the scapula and form a single tendon on the head of the humerus. The rotator cuff is mainly responsible for rotation of the arm and for keeping the shoulder joint stable.
Clear, personalised care for shoulder pain
Every shoulder consultation starts with listening and a thorough assessment of your shoulder, neck, upper back and posture, followed by clear advice on your next steps.

Recognising the Signs
Symptoms of Shoulder Pain
People most often describe pain on the outside of the shoulder that may travel down the arm, usually not beyond the elbow. If symptoms are felt in the hand, a muscular problem or a problem in the neck may be involved.
The pain is usually worse with shoulder movement, especially overhead. Pain at rest, or when lying on the affected shoulder, may suggest bursitis. If pain is very intense for more than a month and is present day and night, further investigation is needed to rule out other conditions, and I will advise you accordingly.
Causes and Treatment
Causes of Shoulder Pain and How Chiropractic Can Help
Repetitive movements at work, poor posture and sports that use the arms are the main causes of shoulder problems. A complete examination of your shoulder and the adjacent joints helps to identify the likely cause. Rotator cuff problems, for example, can relate to tendon degeneration in people over 40, joint instability in younger people or arthritis changes in later life.
Chiropractic treatment aims to address the factors that contribute to the problem. I will help you identify posture and movement habits linked to your work or sport. Chiropractic adjustments combined with exercises can help with poor posture and with loss of flexibility and mobility in the spine that may be related to shoulder problems. Keeping your elbows and arms close to the body when lifting or working can also help an irritated shoulder.
Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is also common. It develops when a body part is overused, and gentle adjustments, joint mobilisation, soft tissue work and posture advice may help support recovery.

Shoulder Symptoms
Shoulder Pain When Lifting Your Arm, Reaching or Sleeping on Your Side
Shoulder pain that appears when you reach overhead, lift a bag or lie on your side can have several sources: the shoulder joint itself, the muscles around it, or the neck and upper back that supply and support it. Ida examines the whole region, including the neck, so that treatment targets the cause rather than just the sore spot.
If you work at a desk, check that your keyboard and mouse are close enough that your arms are not constantly reaching forwards, and take short breaks to roll your shoulders and change position. Chest pain or pain spreading into the left arm with breathlessness needs emergency care, not a chiropractic appointment. See also our pages on neck pain and posture pain.
