Understanding Knee Pain
Knee Pain: What Can Chiropractic Do?
Knee pain is a common complaint. It is often felt together with discomfort in the hip, pelvis or lower back, because the knee can end up compensating for a lack of strength or movement in the hip, ankle or foot.
Whether or not it follows an injury, knee pain can have a variety of causes. Chiropractic care may help when it is combined with exercises that improve strength and condition in the knee and the surrounding joints of the lower body.
With experience in active release technique and hands-on chiropractic care, I aim to ease pain and look at the underlying source of the problem. You can also read more about chiropractic in London.

Self-Care and Advice
How to Relieve Knee Pain
To relieve knee pain, the first instinct is to put as little weight and pressure as possible on the joint, for example by avoiding standing for long periods. Applying cold for around twenty minutes every few hours can also help in the short term.
If the pain does not settle within a few days, or it is severe, it is sensible to have it assessed.
Causes and Assessment
Knee Pain With or Without an Injury
Pain and stiffness in both knees with slight swelling, especially in older people, can suggest osteoarthritis. A knee that feels warm and looks red, and bends painfully, may point to bursitis. Intense, sudden pain with a red, hot knee needs prompt medical advice.
To understand your knee pain, I ask about your history and whether there was an injury, even a minor one. I then examine the knee: is it swollen, tender or warm, and are movements possible and painful? In some situations, medical imaging or a referral to your GP is the right next step, and I will tell you if that is the case.

Knee Symptoms
Knee Pain on Stairs, After Running or at Night
Knee pain that shows up on stairs, after a run or when you lie in bed at night often reflects how the whole leg is working, not only the knee. Stiffness in the hip, a weak gluteal muscle or an ankle that does not move freely can all increase the load on the knee. Ida checks the lower back, hip, knee and foot together so that treatment and exercises address the likely source.
If you run, build mileage gradually and replace worn trainers, and if your knee swells, locks or gives way after an injury, get it checked by a doctor first. Our pages on hip pain and joint pain explain related problems.
